Dentists have to be licensed
All 50 States and the District of Columbia require dentists to be licensed. To qualify for a license in most states, a candidate must graduate from one of the 55 dental schools accredited by the ADA’s Commission on Dental Accreditation and also must pass written and practical examinations. Candidates may fulfill the written part of the state licensing requirements by passing the National Board Dental Examinations. Individual states or regional testing agencies administer the written or practical examinations.

  Frequently Asked Questions

What is a D.D.S. or a D.M.D.?

D.D.S. and D.M.D. are the usual doctoral degrees granted by American dental schools. They stand for Doctor of Dental Surgery and Doctor of Dental Medicine, respectively. There is no difference between the training provided by D.D.S. and D.M.D. programs.

Can dentists provide sedation and general anesthesia?

Licensed dentists must be specially certified to provide certain levels of sedation: conscious sedation, deep sedation, or general anesthesia. Discuss sedation needs, options and concerns with your dentist.

Can dental hygienists provide anesthesia or use other techniques to reduce discomfort?

With additional state certification, licensed dental hygienists may administer and monitor local infiltration anesthesia (for example, novocaine administered by needle) and nitrous oxide analgesia (an inhaled gas) during the practice of dental hygiene. These activities must be supervised personally by a licensed dentist.

What is periodontal (gum) disease?

Periodontal (gum) disease is an infection of the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. It is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. Periodontal (gum) disease is caused by plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on the teeth. These bacteria create toxins that can damage the gums.

What is plaque?

Plaque is made up of invisible masses of harmful germs that live in the mouth and stick to the teeth. Some types of plaque cause tooth decay. Other types of plaque cause gum disease.

Who should wear a mouth protector?

Anyone who participates in a sport that carries a significant risk of injury should wear a mouth protector. This includes a wide range of sports like football, hockey, basketball, baseball, gymnastics, and volleyball.

Why do people need braces?

Braces can correct severe bite problems that would hamper eating and give a greater risk of gum disease and tooth and bone loss. Bite problems may occur when the upper and lower jaw don't come together properly. Uncorrected bite problems can cause teeth to wear down, make for difficult chewing, and put stress on the jawbone, producing pain. Most people do not have naturally straight teeth; in fact, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) estimates that up to 75 percent of people could benefit from orthodontic care.

What is tooth decay?

Tooth decay is the destruction of tooth enamel. Tooth decay is most commonly caused by carbohydrates left on the teeth after eating. Bacteria living in the mouth consume these leftover foods and as a result produce acids that can destroy tooth enamel.
